I create these enclosed and hollowed, coloured pieces once I see the grain structure in the wood
Ash, Elm or Sweet Chestnut or a bland timber like Indian Bean Tree (Catalpa). The most popular colours are the Slate Blue, Green or Royal Blue. I have been known to experiment with colours to create some unusual combinations.
The finish has been applied to the timber to give a ceramic/stone appearance. These turned items are generally scrubbed, coloured and limed to pronounce the grain. The grain selection is particularly important to achieve a balanced appearance to this type of work.
